Meet the Manager - Jesse
Hi I am Jesse and I am the manager of the Halifax store. Upon graduating from high school I was daunted with the task of asking myself, like so many others, “What do I want to do with my life”? After exploring multiple options I always came back to what I am most passionate about…fitness. My beliefs in living an active, healthy lifestyle lead me to diplomas in Health, Wellness and Recreation along with Business Management. After some time working in a fitness centre and a physiotherapy clinic I was drawn to a position with Spartan Fitness. I have been in the fitness industry now for over 8 years and take pride in helping to motivate and encourage individuals to be the best they can be.
My Spartan Success Story
Working with a company like Spartan Fitness you have the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people but one gentleman in particular stands out in my mind. He is a man in his mid 40’s that was overweight and very inactive. He was told by his doctor to “shape up or ship out” and he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. You could tell he really did not want to exercise but his wife was going to make him. After some qualifying questions and trying out a few different pieces of cardio machines I sent them on their way with an elliptical. After about six months he was back in the store a completely different person, 80lbs lighter and all smiles. The same man that was in my store only six months ago that did not want to be here in the slightest was back and very happy to be here. He told me his story of the lifestyle changes he has made and how happy he was that he came in that first day, he was back in the good books with his doctor….and wife! People like this are what make me enjoy my career and push me to motivate others to live a balanced, active lifestyle.
I am an avid fan of MMA and Kickboxing. If you stop by the store and the conversation moves to sports I am not your typical hockey loving Canadian but can I talk exercise and combat sports for days.

Cross-Canada Virtual Rowing Challenge to Raise Money to Fight Hunger
We all know the benefits of physical activity, but it’s not often that half an hour on a rowing machine can help save a life.
On Sunday, October 2, that’s just what participants in Rowing Thru the 6ix (#Rowing4Action) will be able to do in support of Action Against Hunger, a humanitarian organization that fights hunger and its root causes worldwide.
The inaugural event, presented by Spartan Fitness, will see participants racing to row six kilometres on WaterRower machines — the average distance women and children in Africa and Asia walk to get clean water.
“Massive droughts due to climate change and El Niño have left millions of children severely malnourished around the world this year,” says Danny Glenwright, Executive Director of Action Against Hunger. “Combine this with the ongoing Syrian crisis and our teams are working overtime, delivering food and water to those most in need.
“This is why we’re so thankful to be working with Spartan Fitness to save lives and raise awareness about the fact that malnutrition remains the number one cause of child deaths around the world.”
Rowing Thru the 6ix will be held from 9am – noon in Mississauga, next to the Spartan Fitness store at the Heartland Town Centre. Teams of between three to six participants will compete to be the fastest rower, the top fundraiser and the top fundraising team.
The event is also virtual: participants across Canada can use a rowing machine at home or at a local gym and log their progress on social media (#Rowing4Action) and compete for the prize for top “virtual” fundraiser.
“We wanted to create a new event that raises money for a great organization and encourages physical activity,” says Eva Martens of Spartan Fitness. “It’s a simple challenge for an important cause: just $45 provides a full course of life-saving treatment for a malnourished child.”
WaterRower Canada is supporting the event and the top fundraiser will win a WaterRower machine, valued at $1550. Read more about the event and the prize levels.
